This is a great way to give tofu extra taste. It’s a quick fix with just a few ingredients. Serve it as a starter or as part of a mix of dishes to share on the table.
Serves 2-3
Ingredients
- 300 g hard tofu, sliced into 1 cm slices
- 1/2 tsp corn starch
Marinade:
- 2 tbsp light soy (I used Kikkoman all purpose)
- 2 tsp caster sugar
- 1 tsp sesame oil
- 1/2 tsp toasted ground Sichuan peppercorns
- 1/2 tsp five spice powder
Recipe Preparation
Mix all marinade ingredients together in a small bowl, whisking until well combined.
Line tofu slices in a single layer in a shallow dish and pour marinade over. Turn tofu slices to coat, every 20-30 minutes, for 2 hours in total. Drain and save marinade.
Heat vegetable oil in a shallow frying pan and pan dry tofu slices, then pan fry them until they are golden brown, about 2-3 minutes each side. Arrange tofu slices on a plate.
Pour tofu marinade into small sauce pan, then whisk in corn starch and simmer at low heat until marinade starts to thicken. Remove from heat immediately.
If the paste ends up too thick, add water. Taste mixture and add extra soy sauce if needed. This thick paste should be on the sweet side.
Drizzle the sauce on the tofu and serve warm.
